Arancini are said to have originated in 10th-century Sicily, at a time when the island was under Arab rule. Simply a rice ball, that resembles…guess what…an orange. This is where the name and the shape come from.
But is it Arancini the correct term?
Well this is more complex that you will ever know. This is a cultural war in Sicily and for Western Sicilian “L’arancina è fimmina!”. In the Italian language the orange is called “Arancia”(a female gender word). Which brings to Sicilian street food ArancinA.
